There are many fitness myths that are commonly thrown around and could be hurting your efforts more than they are helping.

Myth 1: You Should Stretch Before a Workout

While we have all been told to stretch before working out at least once in our lives, this may not be the best thing to do. There is a ton of conflicting information about stretching. While it is often said that it can help warm up muscles and increase range of motion, recent studies have found that stretching before a workout can actually have negative effects. According to an article from NBC News, when you stretch your muscles before “warming” them up, you create a higher production of Glucocorticoids, which is a stress hormone. These hormones flood the body and create the opposite reaction that you are trying to create.

However, it is not better to start an intense workout without doing any sort of warmup. Instead of stretching, try to do a pre-workout warmup that gets the blood flowing and results in a light sweat.

Myth 2: Running on a Treadmill Causes Less Stress On Knees

Running is a workout that is easy to do anywhere and a lot of people love it. However, it can be hard on the knees and lead to knee problems later in life. A common myth claims that running on the treadmill causes less stress on the knees than running outside. While this may be partly true because it offers a little more cushion than pavement, it can actually cause more issues for your Achilles tendon and muscles in your lower legs.

According to the NBC News article, since running on a treadmill means running on a moving surface, it causes your body to make micro-adjustments while running. These micro-adjustments can cause small but consistent stains that will eventually wear on your knees. When you run on pavement, you have more control over how your body moves, and while it may not be as soft on your knees, it can help you control movement to keep them from these small strains. Unfortunately, running just isn’t the best workout for your knees. If you do choose to run, make sure you have high-quality shoes to absorb some of the impact.

Myth 3: Running on The Treadmill Is As Effective

When it comes to running, you may assume that running on the treadmill is as effective as running outside. Whether someone told you this or you made the assumption based on the myth number two we discussed above, it is in fact a myth.

According to an article from Active, running outside is actually more effective than running the same distance on the treadmill. The uneven terrain and wind resistance that you face when running outside causes more of your muscle to engage, which means you are using more energy and burning about 10 percent more calories. Seems like running outside is the better choice for multiple reasons!
