“Well, I was going to go…”

“I had a long day, I deserve a break.”

“I’m exhausted, I need to go to sleep.”

“By the time I get to the gym and leave, it will be so late.”

You can probably see the common themes in all these thoughts. Far too often, the thing that holds us back from going to the gym is ourselves. Every once in awhile, this kind of thinking is not the end of the world. But when it becomes a standard, and you find yourself skipping out on visits to the fitness studio or group exercise class more than you follow through with attending, it’s time to address some of the reasons that are causing this to happen. Take a look at some of the ways you can correct this type of thinking in a positive, proactive manner, and contact our fitness studio to sign up for a gym membership!

“I’m Too Tired to Work Out”

Except in the case of injury, there’s a commonality in every single person’s mind after they exercise: “I’m so glad I did that.” Even if the workout was taxing, even if it was super exhausting, we rarely regret working out afterwards, and are nearly always thankful that we took the time to workout. The exercise might not even feel like a great one, but it’s still better than nothing.

When you’re feeling especially exhausted, it can seem nearly impossible to pack everything up and get to the gym. One way to combat this is by always having a gym bag ready (or nearly ready) to go. This will eliminate the time and energy needed to gather all of your things, and make it easier to get to the gym. Once you’re there, you’ll be able to get right into your workout — and you will feel so much better after!

“I Left My Gym Bag at Home”

This is a classic gym excuse, and it makes it all the easier to avoid working out. Let’s be honest — who really wants to go all the way back to their home to get their gym bag, and then all the way to the gym after that? This could take up a ton of time, and is such an additional hassle. Since you’re already working out, you need to conserve time and energy for this task. What do most of us end up doing when our gym bag is away? Skip the workout.

The best way to deal with this is to be as preventative as possible. Pack up your things the night before, so that the next day, it’s immensely easier to just grab your items and be on your way (putting everything by the door helps, too!) Build a habit of checking to make sure you have all  your belongings before you leave, and maybe even attach a whiteboard somewhere visible, that you can then list all the things you need to bring.

If you end up skipping the gym once because of the ol’ gym bag song-and-dance, it’s not the end of the world. However, note if it’s becoming a pattern, and make it a habit to become more proactive.

“I’m Starving”

That time after work is very similar to that time after school, in which we become slightly ravenous and are in dire need of snacks. Showing up to the gym hungry is not only a nuisance, it can also be dangerous. It’s important that we have enough fuel to keep ourselves running, and if we’re low on energy, we can end up feeling dizzy, nauseated, and even faint.

It’s good practice to always have a protein bar or some kind of non-perishable snack in your gym bag that you can resort to in times of hunger. You’ll enter your workout feeling way more refreshed and energized, and will be able to experience a better workout. With that being said, it’s also important to take note of when your body responds best to food before a workout. Eating too soon before you hit the treadmill or the weight room can end in cramping, which is never fun.
